Into the Shadows by Marie Jones will have you yearning to travel to the Dingle peninsula in Ireland, if only to experience the warmth and friendliness of the people. Lily Crossways had just returned from a vacation to the Dingle peninsula. Her memories of the area are fond; in particular, beautiful Inch Beach where she had spent some precious solitary times. Her return home brought a surprise. In one of her photographs of the beach was an apparition. It evoked a strong feeling that someone was in need of help. Despite her work commitments, and because of a sense that she is the person designated to provide that help, she embarks on another journey to Dingle.
Locals quickly discovered her intentions. She was a stranger trying to uncover a disappearance they would rather remain buried. There was anger and fear as Lily pursued one clue after another. As she delves further, she discovers a tie to her own family. How could this be? What connection did locals Sean, Greg and David have, if any, and what did they have to do with her? Lily becomes more aware of her inner strengths as she seeks to solve the mystery of the figure on the beach; determined to persevere with her quest.
I found this story almost magical. The story was beautifully woven around the tragic character in the photograph, and the past sins of some locals, as well as Lily’s family. The Irish charm envelops the reader despite the difficult and unhappy search for answers, and carries you page by page into an intriguing story of love, loyalty and betrayal. Well written and a very worthwhile, pleasant read. I loved it. Excellent story and very refreshing.
