The author provided me with an advance reading copy. This is a great rousing story that, while a prequel to Soldier Of Fortune, is a complete short story on its own. The characters are fun, a bit irreverent and, given the small taste of them in this book, are in for some great adventures in the coming books, I hope. Well worth a look for fans of good solid SciFi stories.

Ms. McClure has created a rich and thorough world with far more detail than can be teased out in such a brief book. This bite sized adventure is a good stand-alone introduction to the world of Fortune and one of her protagonists, Gideon Quinn. A quick witted man of honor, Quinn guides us through a world that is both futuristic, but with limited tech — for reasons you’ll need to read to begin to understand. One of Ms. McClure’s best choices is to not beat her readers over the head with the rules of her world. They get teased out and after 2 novels and short story, I still have more question than answers.

If you love Science Fantasy, this is a great series to get in on early.

About the Author

Former actor and fight choreographer (and constant 14 year old), Kathleen has always been fiercely engaged by rip-roaring, escapist adventures.

That said, it’s no surprise she launched her novel-writing career with The Fortune Chronicles, an ode to the adventures she’s been devouring since the age of four, when her mother took her to see Romeo and Juliet (Zeffirelli’s version) and watched Mercutio, Tybalt and Romeo clashing swords.

In addition to exploring the planet Fortune, Kathleen is venturing into deeper, darker territory in The Zodiac Files, (a series she gleefully nicknamed “Spies! In Space!”) with fellow author L. Gene Brown.

Kathleen has short stories published in Timeless Tales Magazine, Lorelei Signals and, with K. Ceres Wright, contributed to Diner Stories: Off the Menu, an anthology celebrating the American Diner. Of course Ceres and Kathleen put their diner in space because the only thing more interesting than Spies! In Space! are Milkshakes! In Space! (Kathleen was often hungry while writing The Last Stop).

She currently lives in Austin, TX with her patient and endlessly supportive husband, two consistently entertaining teens and three cats who take turns getting in the way of the keyboard.
